From BBRC Community Service Director, Char Vega:
At the first meeting of the Community Outreach committee, significant strides were made toward projects which will address the mental health needs of unhoused children and seniors with diminished mental capacity.
Shifting focus from traditional backpack drives, the group prioritized hygiene support and partnering with local organizations such as the Assistance League, Covey Cottages, Bakersfield Chamber, and the Boys and Girls Club. These partnerships will enable more targeted assistance to specific needy families, leveraging these organizations' existing knowledge and resources.
Additionally, the longstanding projects that support the S.E.A.L. students at Rafer Johnson school, which have successfully provided shoes and school supplies for nearly a decade, will continue to benefit from the collaboration.
Incorporating community engagement, the group also plans to host a monthly event to foster connection and support. The Pancake Breakfast, an established tradition, will continue. With assistance from Rotaract and Interact, senior engagement will be enhanced through interactive activities, including games and music, primarily aimed at seniors with diminished mental capacity. Musically inclined members are asked to contribute their talents.
Furthermore, BBRC Member Greg Desme's request to assist Saint Francis with food and clothing on the last Monday of September was accepted, highlighting the group's commitment to ongoing, multifaceted support efforts.
As these plans unfold, the group will provide more details in August, including innovative ways to repurpose old cards and calendars for community benefit.
