Substitution was the word of the day as quite a few BBRCers filled in for others (including me as today’s Beacon writer). Bill Black led us in the flag salute (Heath Niemeyer as flag bearer) while Troy Fringer and Jeff Haynes stepped in as greeters for absent club members. Michael Turnipseed, who didn’t need a substitute, provided the morning’s inspirational invocation. Songstress Carol Smith had us sing a rousing rendition of “You’re a Grand Old Flag'' to get us in the mood for Thousand Flags and Memorial Day.
President Pat introduced Diane Contreras, Executive Director of Casa Esperanza, and Emily Miranda, a resident of Casa Esperanza and recipient of a $500 vocational services scholarship, which she will use to assist in paying for corrections courses at Bakersfield College.

Financial Advisor Jeffrey Schwartz shared that today’s life expectancy is 88 years for men and 92 for women. With the possibility of Social Security going extinct by 2035, it is more important than ever to have the retirement conversation and consider variable income, true liquidity, and guaranteed income.
Greg Desme, Branch Manager for C2 Financial Corp, discussed mortgage options, including reverse mortgage. Plus, Greg had one of the jokes of the day, thanks to his 4-year-old grandson: What did Saturn say to Neptune? Give a ring sometime.
Second joke of the day went to Shannon O’Brien from O’Brien Technologies: How does the computer get drunk? It takes screenshots. For 13 years, O’Brien Technologies has assisted 100 small businesses and organizations with comprehensive network and computer support needs. In his words, “We educate people to make tech do what it’s supposed to do.”
Denise Haynes and hubby Scott are now owners/operators of HMS Print & Embroidery Design (because she isn’t nearly busy enough). She showed off some wares, including mugs, hats, and shirts – along with some boo-boos – and gave a shout-out to fellow members Sally Selby and Marlene Heise for their marketing assistance.
Overall, the Vocational Moments were great fun. This PEN is definitely taking notes for her term.
