Leading us from parts unknown was the Zoom voice of Kay Pitts who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Neither Lino’s Venue House Mic or Projection system may not have been working but this was not going to slow Songstress Carol Smith who had us do an antiphonal rendition of the “Four-Way Test Song” with each side of the room leading one chorus. What a choir! Even as we were clearing the tears from our eyes over the song, Ken Quarnberg Introduced visiting Rotarian Aaron Markovits President of Elect of this cub reporter’s former club, Bakersfield East!
Cheryl Scott introduced two very special guests, her son and his girl. Finally, Karen Bonanno introduced Eric Bautista who expressed his appreciation for BBRC and its mission. Perhaps we’ll see Eric again soon. Concern was offered over Becky Brooks and Athena Collup’s family suffered that suffered a

Pete Leveroni introduced BPD Lt. Ted King who would be speaking on Critical Incident Response.
The lieutenant shared a most thorough look at critical incident response focusing on prevention and mitigation. In order to prevent incidents, one must assess the threats and take reasonable steps towards deterrence. Drilling down Lieutenant King suggestion preparedness, response, recovery; we’re all dependent on specific steps based on how we assess our resources and allies
, how we plan for the most likely incidents, and how we prepare ourselves and our staff members to react in case of a critical threat incident. In case of an incident, a well-trained organization can reduce the impact of an attack by enacting the plan and following a good order of operations. Because BPD response time is 5 minutes, one needs to take action PERSONALLY, Police agencies now recommend three possible responses:

- If escape is not possible then hide, preferably behind a strong barricade like the engineering students during the Virginia Tech attack a few years back
- If confronted with an eminent immediate threat, then by all means fight with all you’ve got.
Leaders should remember to plan for recovery as well by assessing the damage prioritizing needs acknowledging the new normal and conducting a thorough after-action review.

Lt. King- Columbine 1999 changed everything. No more negotiation, they now address violence with violence.
What about these weekly active shooter events?
Lt. King- law enforcement must abide by law like other citizens and cannot preemptively police in this country.
