Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary greeted all members and guests to another display of Rotarians at work and play and the meeting for Wednesday morning the 21st of September was no exception. We were honorably called to order by President Kay Pitts after which our members stood unified to Pledge Allegiance to our nation’s flag. Pat Thompson asked all of our blessings for those we serve and each other. Pat asked if we could keep a relative serviceman of his close in our prayers and thoughts as he prepares to deploy to Afghanistan. For our music pleasure a one and a two … A rendition of our songmaster Neal Walker’s high school fight song was uttered to a melodious tune by one and all.
We recognized member Will Duerksen’s 13 year membership with BBRC and John and Susan Guerard’s 38 years of wedding bliss. And finally, Mike Arriola celebrated his birthday on September 18th. Remind each of these members how valuable they are to BBRC and congratulate them all
We have a lot to be happy about here and just a few of those dared to make their feelings known. Sandy Magley captured a banner from visiting Sunrise Rotary of Woodland California. With 90% of males who were present at that meeting, Sandy really made a “beautiful” BBRC impression.
Adoree Roberson tells of tales of stalking, yes stalking by our own Dr. Joe Nunez stalking little Adoree all the way to Ireland. Geez just seems as if you have to be careful anywhere you are at these days Rotarians. Never know who is watching.
Mary “Trapper” Breckenridge is back from her latest adventure from the high Sierras. I don’t suppose there are any make up meetings that you made up there Mary?
While our Marilee Reagor is ensnarled in her bid of being a Seahawks cheerleader and Sandra Quigley is selling craft beer delights to the glee of our public coffers, our saintly Sister Judy Morasci is plastered upon once again our local news with a salute to Mercy Hospital’s Sisters of Mercy. A recognition for their devoted work will be recognized this Friday at the hospital.

Introducing our speaker and guest Rotarian from Downtown Rotary was Marlene Heise. Marlene said our speaker is a Bakersfield High School Driller. OK that’s all she needs! Good enough. Without further drum roll, our speaker is none other than Mayoral candidate Karen Goh.
Karen enthusiastically and most statesperson like announced her platform which certainly sounded as if she has her plan committed to her “hard drive”. Karen states she is committed to being CEO of Garden Pathways leading families through obstacles that prevent them reaching their full potential. Karen would like to take stock of what matters today in those clients lives and transfer the passion she has for them to all residents of Bakersfield.
Karen tells us she has the experience to fulfill the role of Mayor and asks for our support by voting for her this November. She has three primary focuses.
Creating good jobs by supporting business development and cutting government “Red Tape”.
Creating Safe Neighborhoods by developing “Safe Streets” programs and ridding substance abuse among families in Bakersfield the same way as she works towards that goal for clients within Garden Pathways
Education by expanding training for youth particularly in the careers requiring technical training.
Karen professes to be versatile in that she has and will continue to perform outreach to all residents of the community from West to East regardless of differentiating factors. Karen tells us her commitment to Bakersfield is longstanding and she would like us to keep that in our thoughts when we decide to cast our vote. As children start back to school, we celebrate Education and Literacy Month in September. District 5240 is a leader in supporting education and literacy programs in our local communities and communities around the world. In the Rotary Year just completed, our district gave more than $100,000 in scholarships to enable people to attend four year colleges, community colleges and vocational training programs. Clubs have adopted schools and provide time, talent and treasure to enhance the educational opportunities provided to the students. We mentor students young and old in reading skills. We read aloud to the young children in our community to increase their love of reading. In fact, one of my favorite speaker gifts has been the opportunity to inscribe “best wishes for good reading” in books that will be donated to a school library.
In partnership with Rotary Clubs in Sri Lanka, our district has sponsored the education of more than 1000 preschool teachers throughout that country. We support reading projects in Guatemala and have helped upgrade and equip schools in developing countries to improve the education of the next generation of country leaders.
There is no better example of this year’s district theme – if you can dream it, you can do it – than PDG Deepa Willingham’s dream of educating the girl child and the amazing accomplishments of PACE Universal in support of learning and of community development. PDG Deepa reminds us that an education changes girls’ lives and gives them a future. The PACE holistic program nurtures the girls’ social, cultural and nutritional development and inspires them to be leaders in their communities. Every club in our district has a story about the impact they have made on the life of a student be they young or old. It may be about the person who went to RYLA and had a life-changing experience. It may be about the young adult who is the first in their family to graduate high school or go to college thanks to the support they received from Rotary. Whatever your club’s story, share it to show how your support of education and literacy programs changes lives.
Take time during September to take a look around your community. Are there schools needing your support? Are there students who could benefit from your mentoring? Are there educational opportunities going wanting for lack of time, talent and treasure to bring them to fruition? Remember, it only takes one person, a dream and a Rotary pin to change the life of a child.
