Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club
The Beacon  July 30, 2025

Welcome to another issue of our weekly bulletin! Find out who our upcoming speakers are, what we covered during the last weekly meeting.
Substituing for President Jackie Maxwell is Past President Jeff Haynes.

First, a great big THANK YOU to ourgreeters.  Stephanie Baker led us in our morning invocation, Frank Wooldrige led us in the flag salute and our songstress, Carol E Smith led us as we sang "God Bless America".
Today's Speaker:
This week’s speaker was Chad Hathaway who introduced us to The 1913 Collective.  The 1913 Collective is an entity supporting Bakersfield College student-athletes using Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights.  NIL allows college athletes to earn money from their personal brand without losing eligibility.  1913 is an independent, for-profit collective, not affiliated with Bakersfield College or the district. The collective addresses the gap between financial aid and athletes’ cost of living, especially for those from less privileged backgrounds.

Unique at the junior college level, 1913 provides resources for athletes to stay local or attract talent from out of state. Donations can be made by sport, and funds are earmarked for the selected activities. Contracts with athletes require social media promotion; mentorship is mostly athletic, not academic. The collective acts as a pass-through for donations, not as agents.

Academic eligibility is required to benefit, but there are no additional academic requirements from 1913. Most NIL deals are small ($2,000–$4,000/year), not the high-profile million-dollar deals seen elsewhere. The collective is governed by California Community College Association rules, not NCAA.
The goal is to ensure every dollar donated is spent on the students that calendar year.  As a for-profit organization any money in the bank on December 31st is taxable income.  If you would are interested in contributing to this cause, reach out to Chad Hathaway.

Craft Talk:
Jeff Haynes introduced Bryan Wooster who gave us a “Craft Talk” today.  Bryan, a “born and raised” Bakersfield native who has loved “tech” since the 6th grade when.  That was before Google, so to learn how things worked he had to go to the library and check out books on the subject.  He recalled wonderful mentors through Junior High and High School that nurtured his career path.  Growing up he was involved in Young Marines, and right after high school graduation he joined the Navy where he also honed his tech knowledge.

After working for local MSPs (Managed Service Providers) with encouragement from his wife, he decided to start his own company and Topflight MSP was born.  His success was in standardizing the tech, which made things better for the client.  Fourteen years later, after assisting 89% of his client base to migrate to “the cloud” Bryan’s business is thriving.
Announcements:
Marti Sanders thanked everyone for their donations to fill backpacks for the Back To School drive.  Based on the school supplied heaped up on the table in the entry, it looks like we may exceed our goal.  There are a few days left if anyone still wants to participate.

Jennifer Henry has another amazing social event in the offing.  You won’t want to miss this one.  We will be gathering at The Vault Thursday August 14th at 5:30PM Please send your RSVP to Jennifer by Monday August 4th if you plan to attend.
Jeff honored some newer members who have really stepped up since joining.  Erick Batista, Jennifer Henry, Bryan Wooster, Maya Salinas and Char Vega were given yard signs that say “A Rotarian Lives Here” and “A Rotarian Works Here”.

As he wrapped us the meeting, Jeff called to “the carpet” two past presidents.  Jeff shared that every year Rotary International President declared their theme.  That theme is made into a banner, and each club gets a banner to display at their meetings that year.  While cleaning out the supply box Jeff found two past banners that were not claimed by the president that year. The first was for Karen Bonanno’s year and the second was for David Lari’s year.  Though in David’s defense his year just ended.  Karen self-imposed a fine of $25 for forgetting her flag.

Today's 50/50 for $50 buckeroo's was won by Temo Lopez.  Look at the happy face!
Next week will are honored to have Dr. Steven Bloomberg, Kern County College District Chancellor as our speaker.  We hope to see you all Wednesday August 6th at 6:45AM.

See you all then!!
