Wooldridge's Words
And just like that…the reign of our President Jeff “Bone Crusher” Haynes is behind us. Positively speaking, I think The Prez did an outstanding job! Wouldn’t you agree? C’Mon Man! Being the president is in his blood, sister-in-law Denise Haynes served as president of our Breakfast Rotary club too. If I’m not mistaken, I may had noticed a few Denise-isms during President Jeff’s term of office, and that’s A-Okay too, because under President Jeff, all members can proudly raise their head with pride since there were so many accomplishments during his term.
Record breaking revenues from our fundraisers Wine, Place and Show, as well as Thousand Flags. Record breaking donations to a number of local service projects, record breaking new member totals, while still maintaining good retention numbers and of course probably an often-over-looked source of revenue from The Prez’s reign…record numbers of “fine” income from members purses and wallets. Of course, all in good fun and financial stability of our beloved club right President Jeff? Bureaucrats take notice …
But, with the final ring of the bell and some pretty sharp charcutier boards for the “board” members, President Jeff Haynes year as our fearless leader is over. He will be missed, so will his bagpipes, his cousin Jeth- Row, his peanut butter and jelly and even his skirt, er I mean kilt. As we begin a new term in July with our new president Karen Bonanno beginning our 41st year as Breakfast Rotary we want to thank you Jeff. The next time we see you Jeff in a video it will be as our featured Past President 2021-2022.
Nick Haynes who is The Prez’s son has entertained our club throughout the year with his bagpiping talents, the Bakersfield Police Officer gave us a final Scottish song on the “pipes” to usher in his dad to the podium one last time. An invocation by William Gordon was followed by a moment of silence for recently departed Breakfast club member and former Bakersfield City Councilmember Harold Hansen. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Past President Jackie Maxwell followed by our songstress Carol Smith surprising us all with a rendition of “He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” for our outgoing president. Good choice Carol!
We recognized guest soon-to-be-member Isabel Montesino of Carol Smith. Welcome Isabel! Red Badge members Duncan Harris and Erick Bautista got to turn in their red badges just before the retiring president and earned their Blue Badges. So now they are official! Membership Director Pat Thompson who is also hanging up his title as the best darn membership director ever serving 5 years in the post, announced he will be turning in his title to understudy William Gordon. Big shoes to fill Willie!
Wedding anniversary congrats to newest Blue Badger Duncan Harris (Kendra), Darin Blunt (Shannon), Jeff Bell (Amy) and last but not least, Past President Honorary member and “OG” Jerry Starr (Robin). Ah, love is alive and well in Breakfast Rotary!
A special Rotary 4-year anniversary to Jacque Alexander who served as an outstanding Sergeant of Arms this year. Great Job!!!
President Jeff entered a featurette of Past Presidents over the 40 years of our club’s existence which was a repeat performance from being shown at our Charter Night. Many comments of wisdom and thankfulness rang out from the former presidents that I have elected to repeat in this edition of The Beacon because they underline the very purpose of what Breakfast Rotary has stood for to the Bakersfield community. Comments such as our contributions and efforts to eradicate polio by contributing to the Polio Plus campaign. Building support for veterans and first responders in our Thousand Flags program, maintenance to San Miguel Park, the Christmas Shopping with Children at Target program, supporting families of Habitat for Humanity by roofing homes, mentoring high school students of local Interact Clubs, being honored by Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce as a Beautiful Bakersfield award winner, recognizing numerous non-profits over the years such as 999 Foundation, Special Olympics and BARC as beneficiaries of past annual fundraisers. As you know, I could go on and on.
There were subtle little things shared by the presidents that I did not even know, such as Past President Neil Walker being the founder of the idea of incorporating Happy Spots to inspire members who were, let’s say reserved, to become more vocal. We know Neil’s idea now as a cleaver way to add more bucks to the club coffers at each meeting and NOW we can’t get members to stop talking about themselves. Thanks Neil!
To highlight the importance of others though their team work to Breakfast Rotary, Denise Haynes shared that our most recent Thousand Flags event demonstrated it is just getting bigger and better because of others hard work. She thanked corporate sponsors from the club for their donations and recognized efforts of those members and groups, such as, the Young Marines, who without their involvement, we could not pull off the annual Memorial Day event. Thanks to all the club volunteers, with an added salute of appreciation for the work of Myrna Arias, Stephanie Baker, Jacque Alexander, Jackie Maxwell (Tom), Mindy Wilmot, Michele McClure, Past President Ron “Buford” Nelms, and “Darling” Dave Spalinger for making the program run smoothly.  Denise announced the event netted the club $6357 with a contribution of $2000 to our local Wounded Heroes fund.
At the time of this writing our club is anticipating it’s first known and recorded official Pub Crawl to honor The Prez’s Demotion Ceremony. We will only know how things went after publication of The Beacon. I’ll pray for the “pub crawler’s” safety and that they found their way through the day’s staged events leading to the Demotion. As for The Beacon, I will be right here helping new president Karen Bonanno by writing this weekly news gazette. To give my faithful readers a break, there will be no Beacon Clue to worry about in this addition so we can start out 2022-23 on a clean slate. Thanks for trusting me with this responsibility.
Past President Craig Holland seemingly has luck on his side, time and time again. Today our Craig closed our BBRC year on the winning side again with a $61 dollar take home by winning the Raffle. Atta boy Craig!
