Hello folks! On July 26th, 2023, we had a breakfast rotary meeting for the books. President Pat Thompson set the tone by ringing the bell at 7 am. Charmene Vega blessed us with a moving prayer, Frank Wooldridge led the Flag salute, and Carol Smith rocked out to the "4-way test" song. And if that wasn't exciting enough, we rolled out the red carpet and a colorful balloon display as bright as a Pete Leveroni shirt for our special guest, District Governor Martha Brown. She shared her gotta-love-it mission statement of "create hope in the world," and we gifted her a box of Dewars as a token of our appreciation for her visit.
But wait, there's more! Willie Gordon inducted a new member, Marti Sanders, into our membership, and we have to say we're excited to have her on board.
What's a rotary meeting without a little bit of recognition, am I right? Martha Brown announced Kay Pitts, one of our own BBRC members, as Rotarian of the Year for our District and her 23 years of utterly fantastic service to the club. Keep crushing it, Kay; props to you!
And as always, we stayed true to our roots of giving back to the community. Denise Hayes put together another triumph of a service project, getting all hands-on deck for donations like toilet paper, socks, razors, and more. We delivered the goods to North Rotary members and The Mission of Kern County Executive Director Carlos Baldovinos. Moments like these make us proud to be a part of this club: small contributions significantly impact the world.

New President Pat Thompson presided over an exceptional first club meeting featuring guest speaker Dr. Geover Fernandez, a board-certified dermatologist at CBCC. Dr. Fernandez and his team provide a broad range of advanced skin care services, from screenings to state-of-the-art treatments, including Mohs micrographic surgery, for all skin conditions, including skin cancer, moles, and acne.
Dr. Geover Fernandez discussed common skin issues associated with aging, including thin skin and sun damage, emphasizing the importance of sun protection and early detection. He recommended using protective clothing and seeking shade outdoors, in addition to wearing mineral sunscreen with an SPF of at least 40 or 50, and he suggested ISDIN as a reputable brand. Ultimately, he emphasized that the most effective sunscreen is the one an individual is most likely to use consistently. Dr. Fernandez also lauded Cameron Serda’s Cowboy hat as a stylish and protective option for sun protection.
The club took a moment to celebrate Rotarian Sandra Parnell's birthday and the club anniversaries of Rotarians Willie Gordon and Greg Desme, expressing appreciation for their service and contributions to the club.
The club announced that the District Governor will be visiting on July 26th, urging members to make a concerted effort to attend and showcase the club's exemplary energy and commitment, striving to be recognized as the best club in Rotary.
