  ISeason’s Greetings Rotarians!
Sandra Quigley shouldered the greeter duties on her own this morning. Our scribe extraordinaire, Ken Quarnburg will no doubt be levied a fine for missing his greeter duty. The room was alive with wonderful Christmas music while we chatted and enjoyed our first cups of joe.
A doree Roberson offered the blessing, asking for special thoughts and prayers on this Pearl Harbor Day 75th Anniversary. Queen Jackie led us in the flag salute and Neil Walker heled us through “Here Comes Santa Clause”. Neil provided a bit of trivia, informing us the song was written by Gene Autrey for the Hollywood Christmas Parade. Michael O’D made his entry just about this time. Samy Abiaoui reported no visiting Rotarians. Michele Cooper introduced her guest, the youngest sister of former BBRCer, Susan Eaton, Joanie Haenelt. Rylan Rozell continues to recuperate from surgery and the happy trauma associated with being a new parent so he was unable to be with us to celebrate his 4th year in Rotary. Samy and his bride celebrate 12 years of marriage this month. And apparently, none of us were born this week in December. Wyatt Ward’s table won the sing off, only because of Wyatt’s fancy Christmas lights on his stroller.
Happy Spots:
Heather Ward -$5 for another successful rib removal surgery for Paul. But she also reported the theft of some outdoor Christmas decorations from her yard. GRRR
Stephanie Baker - $100, which is $5 for every year she has been cancer free. She was diagnosed on this date 20 years ago.
Pat Thompson – $10, proud of wife, Karen, for passing her real estate exam. They will be working together. He’s also looking forward to complete left knee replacement on Dec. 22nd.
Jerry Star -$5, Westside Healthcare earned 1st Place walking group in the Taft Christmas parade. He walked the streets as a gingerbread man.
Joe Nunez - $20, picked up by lovely Marlene Heise just because. Joe and the Mrs. traveled to New York to recharge their batteries. Marlene let us know that because she was picking up Joe’s fine, the children in Cuba would not be getting anymore crayons.
Craig Holland announced Dr. Joe was named Referee of the Year. Congrats to Joe!

Business Blast:
The Business Blast was revived this week, first time for President Kay’s term. Greg Desme shared with us. He has been in real estate financing for 25 years. He works for C2 Financial. He can guide you through the confusing world of home financing and can review existing mortgages to help you decide if something better is available. Samy Abiaoui shared that he had refinanced through Greg and was very happy with the outcome.
Community Service:
Christmas Wreaths on December 17th. Arrive by 8am. The ceremony is 8:50 to 10ish. MaryJo Pasek announce the Wreath organization had reached their goal to purchase a wreath for all 5,000 grave sites. BBRC is providing hot beverage and serving donuts. The George’s will coordinate a sign up list for helping with that. The date for unloading the wreaths is not yet known.
Target Christmas shopping with the kids – Jeff Bell explained the unfortunate but humorous reason why/how the date changed from the 3rd to the 10th. In a classic, “Failure to Communicate Correctly scenario, seems Target had it scheduled for the 2nd and had staff ready for everyone’s arrival. Luckily the Target folk were good natured and agreed to pull it together again on the 10th. Rotarians are still needed. East Hills Target, 6:45, Dec. 10th.
SEAL Center Christmas Party – It’s a go! Scott Haynes’ company, Oil Well Service, is sponsoring the party. Friday, December 23rd, 11am to noon at the SEAL School, 1001 10th St. (between N and O). Santa (Scott Haynes) will make an appearance to distribute stockings stuffed with goodies to each child. Cocoa and cookies will be served. Rotarians are invited to be at the party to help Santa, distribute cookies and help sing a couple of songs. Also, if anyone would like to help shop for the stocking stuffers, let Denise Haynes know.
General Announcements:
Annual STEPS Conference January 28th. President Kay is going. Anyone is welcome to attend and can travel down with Kay. Our club has been assessed a fee for this event so there is no charge for the attendees.
Condors game February 7th will be Rotary night. All Bako clubs are invited to attend. $5 margaritas and $2 beer are strong attractors.
Master PRLS will be a whole weekend in Bakersfield, March 10th to 12th. This leadership skills series is excellent for everyone in business, not just for Rotarians.
Youth Service is in need of a replacement for Mike Arriola who has had to resign from our club. Mike was the liaison for the Rotoract group. If you’re interested, please see Ed O’Donnell.
Neil Walker announced the past presidents would be gathering at the Broken Yolk Café on Monday at 7am to begin planning for Charter Night. He announced they would start accepting items for the past president’s raffle held during the event.
BBRC Christmas Party – Friday, December 16th, 6pm, Sandra Quigley’s house, 2600 Barrington St. #30. Meat (deep pit) and beverage provided. Bring a dish according to your last name: A-G: appetizer H-P: side dish Q-Z: dessert. PLEASE send Darin your “yes” as soon as possible.
Program:
Condor’s VP of Operations, Justin Fahsbender shared with us the history of Bakersfield’s only professional sports team. The Condors have been here for 19 years. The team was independently owned by John (missed his last name) who, because of his physical disabilities, could never participate in sports. Being team owner gave him that opportunity and, he shared his team with Bakersfield. In the beginning the team was with the WCHL and it was “beer, fights and some hockey”. The team then became a part of the ECHL, the equivalent of an “AA” team. Rules of the game have seriously cut back on the brawls and more hockey and more professional level hockey is played now on the ice in Bako. Our hometown team has advanced to “AAA” status, having been purchased by the Edmonton Oilers. Our players can play in the NHL if needed.
Justin spoke with great enthusiasm about the winter fest being held at BC Memorial Stadium from Dec. 21 to Jan. 7. The football field/track is being transformed into an outdoor ice skating rink. There will also be a zip line, snowman making area, food booths and the all-important, beer. January 6th is a celebrity-alumni hockey game with members from the Kings and Edmonton Oilers playing opposite TV and other celebrities. Saturday the 7th, the Condors will play at the outdoor arena. During the winter fest, both adult and children hockey tournaments will be held.
Closing bits:
For the raffle, Samy’s Mission Bank donated 2 tickets for the opening of Star Wars. Our speaker, Justin won them.
The second item was a beautiful Pearl Harbor memorial coin won by Denise Haynes.
Four names were drawn before the 100 Paul Harris points were finally awarded to Jackie Maxwell. Mike S., Darin B. and Sister Judy all missed out.
