Rotarians in Action early in the morning

BBRC Happenings
Goood Morrrrning Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary and Happy New Year’s 2021! It is great to be back even though it was through ZOOM. I could not be happier to be a Rotarian and your friend. I will have to admit, arriving at the Yard House for our meeting was wishful thinking. Maybe, at the last minute I hoped they would allow us to meet there, but alas, they did not. So, I found myself all alone in the parking lot taking copious notes of the morning’s meeting. Uh, did you know that parking spaces are 7.5 feet wide…
President David Spalinger welcomed one and all by calling a toast for a successful Breakfast Rotary 2021, and a return to in-person meetings to enable us to prosper in the fine work our club produces. Well President Dave, I hope you are right. We stand and raise our glasses to this toast. Dr. Joe Nunez led the membership in our Invocation. Dr. Joe asked for blessings to those we serve and to all of us in a year of challenges. He reminded us of our Rotary motto, “Service Above Self”. Our honest to goodness flag came to us virtually thorough Heath Niemeyer. Heath led us this morning in America’s Pledge of Allegiance.
Past President Ron Nelms told us there were no visiting Rotarians or guests. Well, c’mon Ron, ya gotta look, you’re a surveyor for crimony-sakes and you’re supposed to be able to find things. Get back with us Ron and let us know how you’re doing finding visiting Rotarians.
Vocational Service Month
From District Governor Deb Linden
Vocational Service Month:

January is Vocational Service Month in Rotary, which marks the intersection of your professional life with your Rotary one. Our members represent a wide range of professions and skills and Rotary opens opportunities for business networking and mentoring of others. To help inspire ideas for Vocational Service Month (or anytime), click here to see the Rotary Vocational Service in Action Handbook. Rotary's Response to COVID
Also from DG Deb Linden
Rotary and COVID:
I have received some questions about Rotary’s role in the COVID education and vaccination program. Here is an official statement from RI staff regarding RI’s involvement in the COVID response:

Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) have built a global health infrastructure that has brought polio to the brink of eradication and is now also being used to help protect communities from COVID-19.

Given promising new developments on effective COVID-19 vaccine candidates, many Rotary members are wondering whether Rotary and its partners can play a role in the eventual distribution of a COVID-19 vaccine, utilizing the polio eradication infrastructure--including the polio vaccine cold chain. While there are conversations ongoing within Rotary and between the GPEI and other organizations involved  in the pandemic response, a strategy to use the polio eradication infrastructure to distribute a future COVID-19 vaccine has not yet been decided. We will keep members updated with any developments as possibilities are explored.

When we hear more from RI, I will notify all members in the District.
