The Beacon The official weekly publication of The Rotary Club of Bakersfield Breakfast It is not every day that we can wake up in the morning and stand a little taller than the day before. Today is one of those days. Do you ask how that can be? You'll understand if you take a moment to absorb that we Breakfast Rotarians just came off a superb Wine, Place, and Show weekend. A total success if you ask me; by the way, I know a few things about Wine, Place, and Show, as well as the previous fundraisers’ Breakfast Rotary has held, and last weekend raised the bar. We look at our biggest fundraiser in terms of how much money we made, and of course, if we could meet our expenses, we did that and much more! Later in this edition of The Beacon, I will share just how much more. But for now, the many present members heard the sound of President Karen Bonanno’s opening bell ring. Debonaire Mike Turnipseed provided an apolitical invocation laced with unity through Rotary service. Dale Bender gave us a spirited Pledge of Allegiance. Songbird Carol Smith led our continued morning choral prowess in singing My Country Tis’ of Thee. Stepping into to introduce our morning speaker role, Bill Black, who serves our club as International Chair and most fittingly presented Nita Hanson. Not a local, Nita is the founder of God’s Hidden Treasures. A non-profit organization she formed in 1997 centered, in all places, in Ukraine. Some may call it bad luck because of the current hostile turmoil of war taking place in the country. Still, Nita’s efforts have become a salvo to the many people served daily by the work Nita’s God’s Hidden Treasures provides. The mission of God’s Hidden Treasures was established to support and guide disadvantaged and displaced poor citizens in Ukraine with essentials that all of us in BBRC have been blessed to access. For instance, Nita and her staff find means to supplement Ukrainian’s needs from worldwide donations. Many of the team furthering the distribution of much-needed daily living essentials are volunteers. This unselfish example of humanity plays out daily in a country now experiencing horrific aggression by Russian military troops. To mention some of the objectives of God’s Hidden Treasures, they are fulfilling: - The Evacuation of Refugees
- Providing Food Packages
- Water Purification
- Children’s Toys and School Supplies
- Medical Assistance
