Member Profile - Denise Haynes

Denise Rene’ Haynes is a true MVP of the Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club. Since she joined in 2005, Denise has brought her A-game to every role on the field. From Program Committee rookie to powerhouse President (2017-2018), she’s done it all, and her record is nothing short of championship material. With titles like Rotarian of the Year (2010-11), a Rotary International Service Above Self Award (2013-14), and even a special shout out from the District Governor in 2022, Denise’s Rotary career is Hall of Fame-worthy.

After a 33-year career playing key positions across eight county departments—capping it off as the Director of Kern County Animal Services—Denise retired in 2017 but stayed in the game, starting a printing and embroidery business with her husband Scott. And like a true all-star, she’s kept her home team strong, with two daughters, two sons, and five grandkids (one more on the way!), plus two pups, Bruce the silver lab and Peanut the pint-sized mutt. Bakersfield born and bred, Denise and Scott have deep roots here, with parents who went to high school together!

Denise is known for her contagious laugh that fills a room—no need for an announcer to let you know she’s around! For her, Rotary is a league of camaraderie, constant learning, and true friendships, where every season brings new plays, challenges, and victories.
Our Speaker, Jeremy Adams
About Jeremy Adams, BHS Teacher, Author
  • Jeremy has been a teacher at Bakersfield High School (BHS) for 27 years.
  • He has tremendous energy and enthusiasm, Super Speaker!
  • His second career is as a writer. (More on this later).
Youth in America
  • Cell phones and Covid changed everything for students, including their behavior and values.
  • Anxiety is the most common word he hears among students.
  • They don’t want to watch movies because they can’t pay attention that long. If they do watch movies, they watch them at 1.5 speed with subtitles so they can also be on their phones.
  • Kids say we need to make the world nicer for them.
Adults in America
  • America is rampant with civic ignorance and decay.
  • Less than one third of the people in the US can name the three branches of government.
  • We need character, virtue, and wisdom back in our lives and schools.  Adults need to lead.
  • Adults in our society need to start adulting.
Recent data Jeremy shared that should frighten you or at least make you nervous
  • 40% of Gen Z characterizes the American Founders as “villains.”
  • 1 in 3 Gen Z view Obama Bin Laden’s ideas as “a force for good.”
  • Only 18% of young people are “extremely proud” of being Americans.
  • A mere 52% of American said they’d fight for the country if invaded.
  • 30% of Americans are broadly dissatisfied with their lives.
  • We have less confidence in our institutions than those of any other G7 Nations.
  • Barely a quarter of Americans say they are “satisfied” with democracy.
  • 43% of millennials believe that success is outside their control.
His second (simultaneous) career as a writer
  • Jeremy has written five books to date on civics, history, and teaching.
  • He said that Plutarch, who lived during the first and second centuries CE, made an impact on the Founding Fathers. They were inspired by the Greeks and Romans in his history books (Plutarch’s Lives, v. 1 and v. 2)
  • He maintains we need an American Plutarch today to shine the light on great people.
  • Jeremy is doing his part to that end in his book “Lessons in Liberty: Thirty Rules for Living from Ten Extraordinary Americans.” For example:
    • Daniel Inouye – “Patriotism doesn’t wait for perfection”
“A revered Japanese-American senator who carried out daring missions in World War II, despite being subjected to shocking racial discrimination by the very nation he risked his life to defend.”
    • James Madison – “Always be willing to change your mind”
“Perhaps the most under-appreciated person in American history, this Father of the Constitution and fourth president is present in almost every pivotal chapter in early American history. His secret? Always be the most prepared person in the room, don’t worry about who gets the credit, and finally, always be willing to change your mind.”
    • Arthur Ashe – “Change the world in your own way”
“Famous as a tennis champion, Arthur Ashe was much more. He learned how to battle the likes of McEnroe and Connors, stand up again the atrocities of apartheid in South Africa, and modeled what it means to die with utter dignity and humanity. His life lessons are truly timeless.”

The wonderment of history is not in what they got wrong, but what they got right.

What you Missed
Celebrations

Congratulations to Bill and Jan Black. On November 22 they will be married 41 years.
Congratulations to Jeff and Donna Bell. On November 24 they will be married 35 years.  According to Jeff, that is 35 years, this time around.

Recognitions

$?? Bill Black recently visited his Army son at Fort Bliss.  Fort Bliss is next to El Paso, Texas.

$20 Dave and Melody Spalinger now have five grandchildren with the birth of Eden Moriah Spalinger on November 13. They are now eagerly awaiting grandbaby number six who is due next week.

The hat was passed for Willie and Nicole Gordon.  One of the very cool traditions in BBRC is to pass the hat for newborns of members (and occasionally newborn grandchildren.)  The money is presented to the new parent/grandparent. They are expected to match the money and open an account for the child. Willie noted that they had matched the club’s present 10:1 for their son Dean.

This time around $393 was collected for baby girl Kennedy Sarah Gordon.  Willie reported that she is healthy and looks like Willie. (We disagree, she has hair and no beard.)

Announcements
Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Foundation (BBRF) President Mindy Wilmot reminded us that this is Rotary Foundation and BBRF campaign month.  If you didn’t receive her email with the pledge form, please contact her at mindy_wilmot@att.net. Note – if you don’t have a Paul Harris Fellowship (PHF) from The Rotary Foundation yet, there is a challenge match going on to get you your first PHF.  Mindy can advise you on this.

Another Note – Our Rotary Zone leadership has a Paul Harris Society Challenge. See the flyer below for more information!

Upcoming Events and Rotary Activities

November 26 – Thanksgiving Basket Assembly at Boys and Girls Club of Kern County, 801 Niles St. It may start at 3:00 pm. December 11 – Offsite meeting (still 6:45 am) at Skyline Cabinets, 800 S. Mt. Vernon Ave.  Dave Spalinger is going to amaze us with the equipment and technology that goes into making custom cabinets from Skyline.  AND we learn more about one of our member’s vocation!

April 10, 2025 – All Club Luncheon at Career & Technical Education Center (CTEC) 7301 Old River Rd, Bakersfield (next to Independence High School).  Annually all of the clubs in Bakersfield through the leadership of the six club presidents has a joint meeting.  The meeting is very well attended (particularly by BBRC members), member’s guests are welcome.
