The Beacon The official weekly publication of The Rotary Club of Bakersfield Breakfast As I write this edition of The Beacon, I am still savoring a part of the delicious breakfast I enjoyed at last Wednesday’s Breakfast Rotary meeting. You ask…How can that be? Well, if you had your eye on the pastry assortment made available by the chefs at our brand-new Breakfast Rotary home at Seven Oaks Country Club as I did, you may have been clever enough to grab a pastry on the way out of the meeting. This is a trick, by the way, I learned from Past President Mike O’Doherty…; you would still be savoring that fantastic fresh breakfast. If having these fine delicious breakfasts are a sign of what is to become at our new BBRC home, we will look forward to you joining us at our next meeting. Best food ever… even Belgian Waffles and fresh fruit! Long-time Breakfast Rotarian Harry Bryant was honored to lead us in stating America’s Pledge of Allegiance. Past President Denise Haynes presided over us to bless our meeting and the works of Rotary endeavors, and Carol Smith led us in singing, in unison, The Star-Spangled Banner. Harry shared an interesting tidbit that today marked the anniversary of the inspiration of the writing of the Star-Spangled Banner in the year 1814! We were honored with just one guest, the former first husband Darren Scott, who is celebrating with his wife, Past President Cheryl Scott. Darren and Cheryl hail from Arvin, where these sweethearts have compiled a total of 33 years in holy matrimony together…consecutive years too! Speaking of Cheryl…which is hard to do because she seems to talk about a lot…she introduced our speaker, the honorable California State Assemblyperson Vince Fong representing the 34th district. For the newbies, Vince was a previous member in good standing in our blessed club until he was elected to the assembly in 2016. Since then, Vince has been on the front lines in Sacramento, attempting to define or redefine state government policy to benefit all Californians. Serving on the state budget, transportation, business, and professions committees, it seems like Vince has little time for a leisurely life, let alone considering re-joining us as a Breakfast Rotarian. But at least he knows which Rotary Club is the best, and the door is always open for him. |
