President's Message
Dear BBRC friends,

I hope you are all doing well and staying safe as we try to “flatten the curve” of COVID-19 cases in our community and the state.  It’s felt like a “spin cycle” kind of week or two, but as we settle in for an extended battle against the virus, BBRC is adapting and working on methods of staying connected and continuing to serve!  Top of the list:  we are now officially a temporary “E-Club” and we held our first virtual meeting on March 25th.

In Case You Missed It

If you missed the first BBRC meeting via Zoom, you missed a fun time!  We had 46 people participating, including former BBRC member Bobbie Hake, first-husband Darren Scott, and Honorary Rotarian Jennifer Yamauchi.  We even had visiting Rotarians! (REALLY!) District Governor Savi Bhim joined us, plus Kelly Ricker president of the Rotary Club of Nipomo.

Jackie Maxwell gave a beautiful invocation, and Sandra Parnell let us in the flag salute (warning everyone to stay seated, just in case we were still in our PJ bottoms!)  Then, songbird Denise Haynes let the group in the most appropriate song:  If We All Pull Together.  Heath Niemeyer introduced visiting Rotarians and guests (and did a bang up job doing it, considering he didn’t even have the benefit of face-to-face intros with said guests).
If you couldn’t attend the meeting (or if you’d like to relive some of the fun!) here’s a link to the recorded meeting…it’s about 45 minutes in length:  https://tinyurl.com/ub35zah  (Don’t worry, next week we’ll be sure not to have the entire club sing at one time…it was, indeed, the very definition of a cacophony, due to internet connection differences!)

Celebrations

During the meeting, I just couldn’t hide the fact that I’m still “ga-ga” over Donny Osmond, and I’m still blown away that Past President Neil Walker somehow managed to get Donny to sing Happy Birthday to little ol’ me (virtually, of course) on my birthday!  (That guy just continues to impress!) Marilee Reagor’s birthday was on the day of the meeting (the 25th), and Frank Wooldridge will be celebrating on the 29th by doing “who knows what,” but we DO KNOW…he’ll be doing it at home, thanks to the Gov’s Stay at Home order.

A Little Fun

We even managed to squeeze in a little of our traditional fun, by bringing up some adorable pictures from Facebook this week.  Dr. Joe Nunez was seen hamming it up with his adorable grandbaby, and Michele McClure was spotted, posing for a glamour shot on the beaches of Hawaii (looks like she got in some serious rest and relaxation)!  And of course, nothing gets in the way of Queen Jackie having fun…she posted pictures of her lovely “view from home,” as she makes the best of her quarantine time!  Bear Mountain never looked so good!

The Broken Yolk Makes Food Boxes Available…on the Cheap!

If you or someone you know could use some healthy staples without heading into a grocery store, Kathy Berry and The Broken Yolk have a great deal!  For just $35, you can pick up a box of fresh produce and other food! This is a great way to help out family and neighbors…or even yourself!  To order a box, call 661-440-5953. Information on the Grocery Box program is their Facebook page: the broken yolk cafe - bakersfield west .

Announcements and Other Stuff

In times like this, staying connected is more important than ever.  With that in mind, BBRC now has an official Outreach Team, including some super Rotarians that will be checking in with members on an individual basis.  Thank you, team, for stepping up!  Remember, every single one of us can (and should!) reach out to other members to be sure they are doing well physically and emotionally.  Isolation can wear on even the strongest of people; a simple call or message can be a salve to someone’s soul.

Teresa Ramos said that the Sierra View Medical Center in Porterville is in serious need of masks, especially for non-clinical employees (like her) that like to have their face covered, even though they aren’t working directly with patients.  If you’d like to help, check out the information below and contact Teresa at ramosalvarez.teresa@gmail.com.

If you didn’t join in this week’s meeting, please plan to join us next Wednesday, when our speaker will be Richard Chapman, president/CEO of Kern Economic Development Corporation

We’ll gather at our regular “Zoom location” (see invitation below…it’s the same as the previous one for March 25th) at 6:45 a.m. for a virtual cup of coffee and fellowship, then we’ll ring the bell at 7:00 a.m.

While it’s most fun to connect to Zoom via computer (if you have a built-in camera and mic), you can also simply call in from your telephone…OR, you can use your phone as a mini computer (thanks to its mic and camera) and enjoy the full experience!

One last thing…this might actually be a terrific time to “bring” a guest to a meeting!  Now, more than ever, people may be looking for a way to connect.  If you’d like to introduce someone to BBRC, simply share the invitation below and bring them along!

In Rotary Service & Friendship,

Cheryl
